What is UIDAI?
The Unique Identification Authority of India, or UIDAI, was established by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY). The organization works according to guidelines set out in the Aadhaar (Targeted Delivery of Financial and Other Subsidies, Benefits and Services) Act, 2016. All the functions and features of UIDAI are outlined in this act.
What is Aadhaar?
Aadhaar is a unique 12-digit number that is randomly assigned by UIDAI to each individual. It serves two key functions for residents of India: it verifies their identity i.e., their Proof of Identity (PoI0 and confirms their address, i.e., their Proof of Address (PoA).
Forms of Aadhaar Card
The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) provides mainly 4 main forms of Aadhaar.
1. Aadhaar Letter
- Paper-based letter.
- Contains your name, fathers name, DoB, address, etc details.
- Contains photo and secure QR code.
2. e-Aadhaar (Digital Form)
It is the same Aadhaar Card that is issued by UIDAI. It can be downloaded from UIDAI’s official website. So, the digital form of Aadhaar is called e-Aadhaar.
There are two versions of e-Aadhaar:
a. Regular e-Aadhaar
- Shows all 12-digit Aadhaar number
- Digitally signed
- Password protected
b. Masked e-Aadhaar
- Shows only last 4 digits (XXXX-XXXX-1234)
- First 8 digits hidden for privacy
- Fully valid and accepted everywhere
3. mAadhaar
- Aadhaar is available in the official mobile app
- Allows carrying Aadhaar on a smartphone
4. Aadhaar PVC Card
- Pocket-sized, durable plastic card
- Contains secure QR code, hologram, and security features
- Very durable
- Same acceptance as paper-based Aadhaar

The UIDAI “My Aadhaar” website offers a range of services to make it easier for citizens to manage their Aadhaar-related needs.
Some of these services require users to login at the official website, myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in, while many others can be accessed without logging in.
This flexibility ensures that users can access most services even if they have lost their Aadhaar-registered mobile number or cannot use it for any reason.

UIDAI My Aadhaar Login: How to Login to UIDAI MyAadhaar Portal?
To take benefit of the various online UIDAI MyAadhaar-related services like Document Updates, downloading Aadhaar, Retrieving EID / Aadhaar number, verifying email / Mobile, VID Generator, Lock / Unlock Aadhaar, Bank Seeding Status, etc. available on the UIDAI My Aadhaar official website, follow these steps to login to your UIDAI MyAadhaar account:
- Visit the official website of UIDAI myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in
- Locate and click the “Login” button on the main page.

You’ll be redirected to a new window where you need to enter your login details.
- Here, firstly, enter your Aadhaar number.
- Then, enter the captcha code displayed on the screen.

- Click on the “Login with OTP” option.
- An OTP will be sent to your Aadhaar-registered mobile number.
- Enter the received OTP in the “Enter OTP” field.
- Click on the “Login” button to access your account.

The login process is successful now. From here, access whatever Aadhaar related service you want.
How to Download UIDAI Aadhaar Card Online?
It is important to have a copy of the UIDAI-issued Aadhaar Card with them, either a physical copy of it or a digital copy. Both of them same acceptance. In order to download your Aadhaar Card online through the official website of UIDAI, myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in/uidai.gov.in, follow the steps provided below:
- Visit the official UIDAI portal at myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in.
- Locate and select the ‘Download Aadhaar‘ option from the main page.

You’ll be presented with three methods to retrieve your Aadhaar:
- Using your 12-digit Aadhaar number
- Using your 16-digit Virtual ID (VID) number
- Using your 28-digit Enrollment ID (EID) number
Option 1: Download Aadhaar Card Using your 12-digit Aadhaar number
- From the provided three options, click on the radio button available in front of the Aadhaar Card option.
- Then, enter your 12-digit Aadhaar number in the designated field.
- Enter the captcha code displayed on the screen and proceed by clicking ‘Send OTP‘.

- You’ll receive a One-Time Password on your Aadhaar-linked mobile number.
- Enter this OTP in the designated area for verification purposes.
- After successful verification, click ‘Download Aadhaar‘. The file will be downloaded as a password-protected PDF.
- To access the PDF, you’ll need to enter a specific password. This password consists of the first four letters of your name in uppercase, followed by your year of birth. For instance, if your name is Divankar Mishra and you were born in 1985, your password would be DIVA1985. - Once opened, you can either print the Aadhaar card or use the digital version as needed. Note that this downloaded PDF carries the same legal validity as the physical card.
Option 2: Download Aadhaar Using your 28-digit Enrollment ID (EID) number
To download the Aadhaar Card using your 28-digit Enrollment ID (EID) number, follow the below-provided steps:
- Here, select the radio button available in front of the Enrollment ID Number option.
- Then, enter your 14-digit Enrolment Number.
- After that, snter the Captcha Code.
- Then, click on the Send OTP button.

- An OTP will be received on your Aadhaar registered mobile number.
- Enter the OTP and click on the Download Aadhaar option.
- To open the password-protected Aadhaar PDF, enter the password, which is the combination of the first 4 letters of your name, followed by your Birth Year.
- Example: Name: Sudhanshu Shukla Born in 1992, your password will be SUDH1992
What is EID, and how to find Aadhaar EID number in the Acknowledgement slip?
An Aadhaar enrollment number, also known as Enrollment ID (EID), is a 14-digit number provided on the acknowledgment slip when an individual enrolls for Aadhaar. The format follows a specific pattern: For example, it might look like: 1234/12345/12345.

The acknowledgment slip is a paper document that includes this Enrollment Number (EID)/Update Request number along with other details like the resident’s name, photograph, demographic information, address, etc. The slip serves as proof of Aadhaar enrollment until the actual Aadhaar number is generated.

Option 3: Download Aadhaar Using your 16-digit Virtual ID (VID) number
- To download your Aadhaar using your 16-digit VID Number, click on the radio button in front of the Virtual ID Number option.
- Then, enter your Virtual ID Number, Captcha Code, and click on the Send OTP option.

- Enter the OTP received on your Aadhaar-registered mobile number in the designated area and click on the Download Aadhaar button.
- As we have discussed earlier, the e-Aadhaar PDF is password-protected. To open it, you will need to enter a password. The password is the First 4-letter of your Name (in capital), followed by your birth year.
What is Virtual ID (VID) and How to Generate It?
A Virtual ID (VID) is a 16-digit temporary, revocable number that Aadhaar holders can generate as an alternative to sharing their actual Aadhaar number. Users can generate multiple VIDs, but only the latest one remains active and usable. The rest of the generated earlier will automatically be deactivated.
The VID can be generated online through the UIDAI official website myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in or through SMS as well.

Update Aadhaar Card
UIDAI provides the Aadhaar update services as well. It can be downloaded via:
- Online Method (Only for POI- Proof of Identity, and POA- Proof of Address)
- Offline Method (Name, Date of Birth, Gender, Mobile Number, Email, Address, or Biometric)
To update your name, birth date, gender, mobile number, email address, residential address, or biometric data (photo/iris/fingerprint), you’ll need to schedule an appointment online with Aadhaar Seva Kedra and visit the place in person. This process is known as an offline appointment. Further details, along with the necessary document requirements are provided below.

How to Update Aadhaar Card Offline?
To update your Aadhaar card offline, follow the steps provided below:
- Visit the official UIDAI website myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in.
- Locate and click on the “Book an Appointment” section.

- It will lead you to the appointment login portal- https://bookappointment.uidai.gov.in/
- Here, you can login via two methods:
- With Mobile OTP, or
- With E-mail OTP
- Select one of the two options.
- Then, enter your Name (same as mentioned on the Aadhaar Card).
- Enter your Mobile Number or Email ID (depends on the option you have selected).
- Then, enter the Captcha Code, and click on the Send OTP button.

- An OTP will be received on your Mobile Number or email ID (depending upon the option selected).
- Enter the OTP in the designated area and click on login.
- Now, enter your city or location and proceed to book an appointment.
- Now, click on “Select Enrollment Type” and choose “Update Existing Aadhaar Details” from the dropdown menu.
- Then, click on the Preview button.

- Enter your Aadhaar number and your name as it appears on your Aadhaar card.
- Select the details you wish to update from the options Name, Date of Birth, Gender, Mobile Number, Email ID, Address, or Biometric by ticking the appropriate boxes.

- Review the information provided and click on ‘Confirm’.

- Now, choose your state, city, and preferred Aadhaar Seva Kendra branch.

- Select a convenient date and time slot for your appointment.

- Proceed to the payment option (online payment is recommended).
- Pay the required fee of Rs. 50 for updating your details.

- After successful payment, download and print the application form.
- On your scheduled appointment date and time, visit the selected Aadhaar Seva Kendra.

- Submit the form to the authorities at the Aadhaar Seva Kendra.
- The authorities will process your request to update the requested details linked to your Aadhaar.
How to Update Aadhaar Card Online?
As we know, the Aadhaar online update services are limited to updating only Proof of Identity (POI) and Proof of Address (POA) documents. This online POI and POA update feature is free of cost till 14/06/2026. After that, UIDAI will charge some amount for the updates. Let’s understand how to update these Aadhaar Details online using UIDAI’s official portal, myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in.
- Open your web browser and go to myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in.
- Locate and click on the “Document Update” section on the homepage.

- Now, enter your 12-digit Aadhaar number and captcha code for verification.
- Then, click on the “Login with OTP” option.

- An OTP will be received at your Aadhaar-registered mobile number.
- Enter the OTP received on your registered mobile number in the designated area.
- Then, click on the “Login” button.

- Carefully check your personal details (name, date of birth, gender, address).
- Compare these details with your POI and POA documents.
- Now, accept the terms and conditions.
- Then, upload your Proof of Identity document (follow format and size guidelines).
- Upload your Proof of Address document (follow format and size guidelines).
- Provide final consent to complete the process.

- You’ll receive a confirmation message upon successful submission.
- Download and save the acknowledgment receipt for your records.

Aadhaar Update Charges Revised- Effective from 1 October 2025
The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has officially revised the charges for Aadhaar enrolment and update services, effective from 1 October 2025. This revision will take place in two phases and aims to ensure that Aadhaar service centres are properly compensated while keeping essential services affordable or free for residents.
